Manchester Royal Infirmary – Banyards Supports Major Emergency Department Upgrade

Banyards is proud to have played a key role in the successful completion of Phase 1 of the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) Emergency Department renovation, part of a transformation project that will future proof this vital healthcare hub for generations to come.

The first phase of the project, delivered by Integrated Health Projects (IHP) Vinci, saw the opening of a brand-new resuscitation area. Banyards provided commissioning management services for IHP, helping to ensure the facility’s technical systems were rigorously tested, optimised, and ready for safe operation from day one.

West CumberlandA Modernised Resuscitation Area

The new resus area, now operational, marks a significant milestone in the redevelopment of MRI, a Major Trauma Centre serving Greater Manchester. The upgraded space was 18 months in the making and includes a more streamlined layout, cutting-edge medical equipment, and increased capacity, expanding from 6 to 10 resuscitation bays.

Designed with direct input from clinical staff, the resuscitation rooms prioritise patient dignity, privacy, and noise reduction while maintaining visibility for close clinical monitoring. The increased space also allows for smoother team coordination and accommodates essential life-saving equipment more efficiently.

Future-Focused Redevelopment: Project RED

Known as Project RED (Renovation of Emergency Department), the overall development will modernise and expand MRI’s emergency care facilities to meet the growing and changing needs of the Manchester population. Built in the 1970s, the original emergency department was no longer equipped to handle current demands.

Future phases include the construction of 27 major treatment cubicles (up from 16), and six new state-of-the-art operating theatres. These additions will support MRI’s role as a regional centre for complex and specialist surgeries, including trauma, transplant, liver, and cancer-related operations.

The theatres, located on the second floor, will provide increased capacity and upgraded surgical environments that reflect the evolving standards of 21st-century healthcare.

Sustainability and Innovation at the Core

In line with the NHS’s net zero ambitions, the project incorporates future proofed mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems. These include adaptable plate heat exchangers designed to support sustainable heating solutions.

Tony Craig (Commissioning Operations Manager) commented: “Interfacing with services in a live hospital presented unique challenges, particular in ensuring the Emergency Department remained operational throughout” .
