The restoration of the Hayward Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room is the next step of improvements in the Southbank Centre’s ongoing programme of upgrading its performance spaces to meet the exacting requirements of 21st century arts buildings.
The project includes installing a new multiple pyramid-profiled, glazed roofing system to the Hayward and Purcell buildings. The Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room auditoria will be refurbished providing better access; substantial upgrading of the stages, galleries and back stage areas, and to preserve the character of the venues, the walls, floors and ceilings are being renovated and existing seats are being retained and restored. Other features include upgrading the building services such as plant, heating and cooling, ventilation, lighting, water supply, and specialist stage lighting and the installation of new fire alarms, security and IT cabling.
New areas will be created with new glazing on the south western corner of the Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer and the rear undercroft area adjacent to the existing Purcell Room artists’ entrance.
Initial works are underway and the project is due to complete in May 2017.
